For Session Action: The Worship Team recommends approval of the following motion:
WHEREAS, the 2014 General Assembly of the PC(USA) approved an authoritative interpretation and a Book of Order amendment permitting ministers and sessions to use their own discernment to conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies where allowed by law; and
WHEREAS, the 2014 General Assembly of the PC(USA) approved an amendment to its Book of Order affirming that marriage is a unique commitment between two people, pending ratification by a majority of PC(USA) presbyteries; and
WHEREAS, a majority of PC(USA) presbyteries ratified the Book of Order amendment affirming that marriage is a unique commitment between two people;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Session of First Presbyterian Church, Stillwater, and its pastor approve the use of church property for a marriage service between two people who, in the judgment of the pastor, demonstrate sufficient understanding of the nature of the marriage covenant and commitment to living their lives together according to its values.
The motion was approved with one vote against it.
